What is the Nephio Kubernetes Framework?
Kubernetes has been tremendously successful for container orchestration. It can be extended to orchestrate and manage infrastructure and network services, but certain gaps need to be filled. These gaps have been filled by the Nephio Kubernetes framework.
The Nephio community has articulated two initial use cases and we are adding a third:

Nephio Release 1.0
The first release, Nephio R1, is now available. It includes a framework to orchestrate CNFs, infrastructure, and cross-domain lifecycle management; along with core Nephio principles and Kubernetes integration using custom definitions (CRDs); and an enhanced user experience and sandbox environment.
At Aarna, we believe Nephio R1 introduces features to empower telecoms and enterprises to efficiently configure and manage cloud infrastructure and network functions using Kubernetes-based intent automation.
New Feature Details
- Common configuration templates to provision and life-cycle management of cloud infrastructure, Kubernetes clusters, 5G network functions and network configurations.
- Gitops- based package management and scaled deployment using Kubernetes Resource Model (KRM) and Configuration as data (CaD).
- Uniform Kubernetes CRD and operator-based deployment of multi-cloud infrastructure and multi-vendor network functions.
- Kubernetes- based Nephio control-plane which supports single pane of management of large scale deployments.
- Common set of user interface and APIs for integration with service orchestration layers.
- Multiple personas- based management and approval of configurations, and much more.
Aarna Nephio Support 1.0 (ANS)
Aarna Networks is leveraging our deep experience with Nephio to offer a commercial support package for upstream Nephio R1 – Aarna Nephio Support 1.0 (ANS). ANS makes it easy to get started with a comprehensive support to help you deploy, configure, and manage Nephio.
- Automating upstream R1 installation on bare metal server(s), GCE, or other cloud provider
- Bringing up and configuring K8s clusters
- 8x5 or 24x7 operational and maintenance support
- Developing controllers as needed
- Using Nephio to deploy Free5GCore, infrastructure, or other network services
We also believe that Nephio is perfect for the Open RAN networks and the O-RAN SMO as Nephio can manage O1 (Configuration Management), O2 FOCOM (Federated O-Cloud Orchestration and Management), and O2 NFO (Network Function Orchestration).
